REU

With funding from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense, the University of North Dakota's (UND) Department of Computer Science is pleased to offer a unique Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in the area of mission-critical cyber-physical systems.

Selected participants will gain hands-on experience with a real mission-critical cyber-physical system, an appreciation of the design processes through field trips, and participate on the design of a UND developed Open-Source/Open-hardware CubeSat class satellite (OPEN). In order to test the systems required and provide participants with hands-on experience of conducting a mission, we will conduct one launch per year of a prototype on a high-altitude balloon. This includes the preparation and testing of the prototype, launch, recovery operation, and post mission debriefing. Participants will travel to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, Ca) where they will be mentored by scientists in the mission and software design groups and conduct a review of their work at UND and a mock mission.

Participants will receive a stipend (up to $5,000), room and board, funding for travel to and from UND (up to $750), and use of the student athletic facilities.

The summer 2017 REU program will run June - August, 2017. Application review will begin March 16, 2017 and continue until all positions have been filled.

Participating undergraduates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions who are enrolled in undergraduate degree programs. Women and members of traditionally underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

High school graduates who have been accepted at an undergraduate institution but who have not yet started their undergraduate study are also eligible to participate. All participants must be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of participation.
